Dominick began his first day of kindergarten today! He was so excited he jumped right out of bed. He showered, brushed his teeth, put his own clothes on, did his hair, and then headed into the kitchen to eat breakfast. We dropped Dylan off at Ms. Kathy's and Dominick kissed and hugged his baby brother.
On the way to school he began to tell Shawn and I that he was really excited but a little nervous too! He asked Shawn if he ever felt that way. Of course, Shawn replied with yes. Then Dom explained, "It is kind of like a roller coaster you have never been on. You know you are going to like it, but it is new and you don't know what to expect." This child is wise beyond his years!
We arrive and line up in the gym behind the teachers name. He sits down sweetly and patiently waits for Mrs. Garcia to gather her ducklings. Some mommies were sitting by their hesitant little ones and I wanted to, but Dominick was as placid and self- assured as ever.
When we reached the room there was a moment of chaos as supplies were distributed and put away. Then in her most magical voice Mrs. Garcia told the class we would all read a story before we say good-bye to one another. This is where I interject and say...I WAS DOING FINE at this moment.
As her voice filled the cozy classroom a story about a little raccoon began to come alive. Like Dominick he too was beginning his first day of school. Like Dominick, he too was a little nervous and excited. Like Dominick, he too was curious about the unknown. Well let me tell you that momma raccoon told that little raccoon to hold out his paws. She kissed them ever so gently and told him if he started missing his momma he could look down and there is were her heart would be. She told him she loved him and little raccoon walked into the school.
So after the story is over....(STILL holding it together) she passes out these little heart stickers and tells all the kids to take them to their mommies and daddies and say their good-byes. (THIS IS THE POINT I LOST IT!!!!)
Poor Dom! I was the only mommy in there sucking up my snot! Thanks Mrs. Garcia for the lovely story.
